How long before you can walk and drive on new concrete?

New concrete looks hard within hours, but it is still gaining strength for weeks. Rush it and you can leave marks or cracks. Here is the simple version.

Foot traffic

You can usually walk on a new slab carefully after 24 to 48 hours, once it is firm to the touch. Keep kids and pets off it until then.

Driving and parking

Hold off parking a car on a new driveway for around 7 days. Concrete reaches a good chunk of its strength in the first week, but it keeps curing for about 28 days, so go easy with heavy loads in the first month.

Looking after a fresh pour

  • Keep heavy items off it for the first week.
  • In hot weather, the surface may be kept damp to cure properly, we will tell you if so.
  • Avoid dragging heavy or sharp objects across it early on.
